History of
The Grateful Bread Company
The Grateful Bread Company has been many years in the making. Head baker and owner Alex McDaniel began working in Atlanta-area restaurants in 1992. Working his way up through several bakeries, Alex discovered his passion for bread and the immediate need for restaurants to have quality, fresh bread products on a daily basis.
In 1999, Alex purchased The Bagel Bin, a small bagel and bread shop located in Vinings. It was here that Alex met Pedro Mendoza, who would become his right-hand man. Together, they began perfecting their recipes while crafting artisan breads.
It didn’t take long for Alex and Pedro’s baking needs to outgrow the small size of The Bagel Bin. In 2003, in order to fulfill the needs of their growing wholesale customer base, they moved to a bigger facility with more mixers, table space and ovens.
It was this transition which took Alex and Pedro out of their retail space and into what is now The Grateful Bread Company, a wholesale bakery in located Smyrna, Georgia, just minutes outside of Atlanta.
Today, The Grateful Bread Company bakes over 4,000 pieces of bread a day. GBC also bakes a multitude of sweets including a variety of cookies, Danish pastries, and pound cake.
